Long ago, well before Europeans explored and settled in what would eventually be known as North America, ancient cultures flourished here.

We are all familiar with some of these cultures - the Mayans, Aztecs, the Pueblo and Arapaho of the Southwestern Desert, the Mound Builders of the Midwest and the Iroquois of the Northeast to name a few...

Not so well known are the River Dwellers of Northern Florida whose descendants would eventually migrate south to the lower portion of the peninsula of Florida. These ancient people, the Calusa, are believed to have lived in Southwest Florida possibly as long as 60 centuries before the time of Christ.

A small island on the Southwest coast held a special significance for this tribe. Because hurricanes veered away from it and made landfall further north, the Calusa believed this island was sacred. Thus, they made it a shrine from which they worshipped their gods.

This island was Marco Island, Florida, a land of natural beauty, exotic wildlife, and now a world-class resort island. Marco Island, south of Naples on Florida’s lower southwest coast, is the northernmost and largest of the islands in the chain known as the Ten Thousand Islands.

The island, about six miles long and four miles wide, covers an area approximately 9,000 acres and is connected to the mainland by two bridges, one leading to Naples 16 miles to the north, the other to Miami, 104 miles due east.

Within the Marco Island area are the Isles of Capri, a residential community, and Goodland, a tiny fishing village at the southernmost tip of Marco that retains many of the same qualities it had a century ago.
